Our homes are inherently personal to us. They’re where we share some of our earliest memories, wonderful times with family and friends, much of our free time, and they take us through the different stages of our lives. With such significance to us, their design should reflect this individuality. With 8.3 million households in Australia, it’s important to make your home truly yours. For today’s home transformation, that’s exactly what we achieved for this family!
Background
Their original house was a simple, double-brick home located on a quiet street in Lane Cove North. Over time, they found that their existing home just wasn’t suited to their lifestyle and didn’t reflect their personality. To switch things up, the owners wanted to increase usable space and renovate their living areas. They had a few key features in mind, including an open plan entertainers kitchen, which opened out onto a new alfresco area for entertaining. They also wanted to move the laundry to the back of the house, closer to the yard, as well as converting an unused bedroom into an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe for the master bedroom. Finally, the owners needed an additional bathroom to be built downstairs.
With all of these changes, their family would be able to enjoy a brand new, functional home design with plenty of entertaining space!
Here’s how it looked before…
The Process
To bring these homeowners the home they had envisioned, plenty of work went into the process! For starters, the project involved demolishing the existing rear roof and concrete slabs, plus all the internal walls in the living area and kitchen to create an open plan living space, better flow and completely transform the home. This was the basis of the new home’s layout, bringing greater usable space to the house. Next up was the kitchen…
Designed by Kitchens by Emanuel, the kitchen encompasses everything the owners were looking for. From the spacious island bench, to the skylight above, right down to the minimalist cabinetry, the design is beautiful. The large island bench creates a perfect informal space to enjoy meals whilst still having a formal dining area away from the kitchen for entertaining family and friends. The new floating floors complete this stunning extension and the skylights enhanced the natural light of the home.
The perfect master suite was created by converting an existing bedroom into a new ensuite and walk-in wardrobe. Additionally, we completely upgraded another existing ensuite for a fresh, more usable space. To finish this off, a new laundry with an external door to the yard was added at the back of the kitchen to ensure ease and practicality in accessing the backyard.
The modern and stylish design of this home continues out to the exterior, where a refreshed backyard space and alfresco dining area create the perfect place for hosting family gatherings! Cladding was used on the exterior of the extension to match and blend seamlessly with the existing second story. The beautiful, raked COLORBOND skillion roof is a stylish design feature that creates a sense of space, openness and light within the home. Continuing from this, the raked ceiling into the alfresco area creates fantastic air flow through the home and again, floods the area with natural light. In addition, we removed the entire existing roof tiles and replaced them with COLORBOND to tie in with the new extension.
The finished project
Our homes should reflect our individual style and enhance our lifestyle, and in this case, the resulting home achieved exactly that! The owners were left with a much more functional, spacious home, fit with the kitchen and outdoor space any entertainer would dream of. Check out the finished home:
