Moving into a brand-new home is such an exciting experience, but what about those who love their existing home location but still want a new space?

Well, this is exactly what happened for our client in Pymble! Residing in a quiet street with lush trees while still being central to shops, schools and universities, our client’s location was already perfect. However, their outdated home was simply not fitting for their lifestyle needs and aesthetic taste.

The Plan

To revamp their home in a way which accommodated for their family lifestyle, the owners were looking to increase their entertaining space. To do so, they sought to re-build the garage with a partially enclosed covered terraced alfresco area above it and open up the kitchen to add in a walk-in pantry with new stair access to the yard.

Original plans were to demolish the garage with the entertaining area on top, however we worked with our engineer to explore further options. In the end, we were able to maintain the existing garage and pour a new suspended concrete slab over the existing structure, therefore saving the owner a massive $80k in building costs!

The Process

The wall to the terrace area was created using recycled bricks and the gabled roof covering the terrace features exposed rafters, covered by James Hardie Hardiegroove lining boards. Highlight windows were custom built in to enable light into the space to make it feel large and inviting, along with four skylights to bring natural light flooding into the space.

A key focus for our clients was on creating open spaces, so new aluminium bifold doors were installed to replace the old cedar doors to enlarge the space when the owners are entertaining. To top it off, a matching bifold window servery was installed off the end of the kitchen to the deck to enable ease of serving with a recycled timber servery top! For the kitchen, it was time to utilise the space available in a way which suited the new entertainment layout. The original kitchen had very little storage space, so opening up the space to include a walk-in pantry made the kitchen much more functional. This was achieved by re-claiming space from the outside verandah to create the new pantry. Moreover, the addition of an island and the bifold window servery has enhanced this kitchen into an entertainers’ delight.

When renovating a space, it is important to ensure that new features blend well with the existing home, so we ensured this by installing semi-frameless glass balustrading with timber top-rail. This gave the home a modern feel and allowed the owners to see from the terrace down to the pool area, and the new exterior walls were rendered to match the existing home. As for the exterior appearance, a new garage door added a more modern element to the façade of the house and re-roofing with new Boral Macquarie roof tiles ensured the extension looks seamless. In the end, our client couldn’t have been happier with the result! Their outdated house had been transformed into a stunning, modern home with functional living spaces and great entertaining areas.
